Netlify vs Vercel:which platform should you choose?

Both deploy modern front ends from Git, serve them from a global CDN, create a preview for every change and run serverless functions. Both support Next.js, Astro, SvelteKit and Nuxt. The real differences are in Next.js depth, how you pay for a team and which features are built in.

Written by Sengo, a Netlify partner listed in the Netlify agency directory, that also delivers projects on Vercel. We disclose the partnership; it does not decide the verdict.

Netlify
vsVercel

TL;DR

The honest short answer

If your stack is built around Next.js and you run heavy server workloads, Vercel is the natural home. Vercel created Next.js, so new framework features work there first, and its Fluid compute and built-in analytics suit app-like sites.

If you run several frameworks or a composable stack with a headless CMS, or a large team needs access without per-seat costs, Netlify is often the better fit. Forms and branch-based split testing are built in, and the Pro plan covers unlimited members.

Choose Vercel if

Next.js is the center of your stack

Day-one Next.js features, Fluid compute for server workloads and built-in Web Analytics and Speed Insights.

Choose Netlify if

You run a composable, multi-framework stack

Built-in forms and split testing, unlimited members on Pro and a framework-agnostic approach.

When to choose each

Choose Netlify when

You want a flexible platform for a composable stack

  • You run Astro, SvelteKit, Nuxt or several frameworks across sites
  • Your site pulls content from a headless CMS and rebuilds on publish
  • You want forms and split testing without extra services
  • Many people need access and per-seat pricing would add up
  • Non-developers should be able to propose changes through AI agents, with developers approving deploys

Choose Vercel when

You want the best home for Next.js

  • Your product or site is built on Next.js and you want new features first
  • You run server-heavy pages or AI features that benefit from Fluid compute
  • You want real-user performance data without adding a tool
  • You need SSO or a HIPAA BAA without moving to an enterprise contract
  • A small group deploys and a larger group only needs to view and comment

If you need to switch

Moving between Netlify and Vercel is usually a configuration project, not a rebuild, because both deploy the same frameworks from Git.

Netlify to Vercel

Typical when a team standardizes on Next.js

  • Move redirects and headers from netlify.toml or _redirects to vercel.json or the framework config
  • Rewrite Netlify Functions and Edge Functions as Vercel functions
  • Replace Netlify Forms with a function or a form service
  • Copy environment variables, then test a preview deployment before changing DNS

Main effort driver: the number of functions, forms and redirect rules

Vercel to Netlify

Typical when costs per seat grow or the stack diversifies

  • Check that the Next.js features you use are supported by Netlify's adapter
  • Move rewrites and headers to netlify.toml and port functions
  • Recreate analytics and feature flags with Netlify features or third-party tools
  • Copy environment variables, validate caching and ISR on a Deploy Preview, then switch DNS

Main effort driver: Vercel-specific features in use, such as Fluid compute, flags and analytics

Common questions

Is Netlify good for Next.js in 2026?

Yes. Older comparisons said Netlify lacked server-side rendering; that is no longer true. Netlify supports the App Router, server rendering and ISR through its Next.js adapter. Vercel still gets new Next.js features first, because it builds the framework.

Which one is cheaper?

It depends on team size and traffic. Both Pro plans start at $20 per month. Netlify includes unlimited members and bills usage in credits, including for production deploys. Vercel charges $20 for each extra deploying seat and meters usage per resource beyond a $20 included credit. Model your real deploy frequency, bandwidth and team size before deciding.

Is the Netlify free tier still more generous?

Not in a simple way anymore. Netlify's Free plan includes 300 credits per month, and Vercel's Hobby plan is free for personal, non-commercial use with fixed limits. Commercial projects belong on a paid plan on either platform.

Do both support edge caching and ISR?

Yes. Both serve pages from a global CDN, support incremental static regeneration and respect Cache-Control headers such as s-maxage and stale-while-revalidate. Read more in Faster Sites with Vercel and Netlify Edge.

Which is better for regulated industries?

Both hold SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001 and PCI DSS and support HIPAA with a business associate agreement. Vercel offers the HIPAA BAA and SAML SSO as paid add-ons on Pro; Netlify keeps SSO and SCIM on Enterprise. Ask each vendor for its current reports through its trust center.

Can a headless CMS work with both?

Yes. Contentful, Storyblok, Sitecore and other headless CMS platforms can trigger rebuilds or revalidation on both. The choice depends more on your front-end framework and team than on the CMS.
