Netlify vs Akamai:front-end cloud or enterprise edge?

These two solve different problems. Netlify is a developer front-end cloud: Git deploys, a Deploy Preview for every change, functions, forms and a managed CDN. Akamai is an enterprise edge platform for delivery and security at very large scale, with its own cloud compute. The useful question is which job each one should do in your stack.

vsAkamai

TL;DR

The honest short answer

If you need to ship a modern, composable front end and let a whole team review changes, Netlify gets you there with little operational work. Deploy Previews, forms, split testing and functions are built in, and the Pro plan covers unlimited members.

If you need to deliver and protect a large, mixed web estate, with strict security, heavy media or government compliance, Akamai is built for that job. You or a partner run the origin, and delivery and security are usually negotiated in an enterprise contract.

Choose Netlify if

Your team ships a composable front end

Deploy Previews, built-in forms and split testing, unlimited members on Pro and a framework-agnostic approach.

Choose Akamai if

You deliver and protect a large estate

More than 4,300 edge locations, WAF, bot and DDoS protection in one product, media optimization and FedRAMP Moderate.

When to choose each

Choose Netlify when

You want a managed home for a composable front end

  • You run Astro, Next.js, SvelteKit, Nuxt or several frameworks across sites
  • Your site pulls content from a headless CMS and rebuilds on publish
  • Reviewers and editors need a Deploy Preview for every change
  • You want forms and split testing without extra services
  • Many people need access and per-seat pricing would add up

Choose Akamai when

You need delivery and security at enterprise scale

  • You protect many sites, apps and APIs, not one front end
  • Bot abuse, credential stuffing or large DDoS attacks are a real risk for you
  • You deliver heavy image or video traffic to audiences around the world
  • Procurement requires FedRAMP Moderate or a negotiated enterprise contract
  • Your team, or a partner, already runs origins and infrastructure as code

Using Netlify and Akamai together

Large organizations often keep Akamai for the wider estate and host a new front end on Netlify. Netlify's support guidance is direct about one point: it does not recommend placing another CDN or proxy in front of its own.

What Netlify says about a CDN in front

Netlify says proxying to its service is generally not supported. Another CDN in front adds a network hop, can cache assets past an atomic deploy so changes do not show up, and breaks features that depend on direct traffic, such as accurate analytics and split testing.
If you cannot avoid it, Netlify asks you to point the proxy at your yoursite.netlify.app hostname and to make sure the proxy does not cache Netlify-served routes. Netlify limits technical support for this setup to Enterprise customers.
A pattern we often recommend: keep Akamai in front of the hostnames it already protects, such as legacy apps and APIs, and point the new front end's hostname directly at Netlify, using Netlify's own security features. If policy requires one edge for every site, plan it with Netlify Enterprise support and test on Akamai's staging network first.

If you need to switch or combine

Moving between these platforms is more than a configuration change, because Akamai does not build or host your front end for you. Splitting hostnames between them is usually the smaller project.

Netlify to Akamai

Typical when a site must join an estate already on Akamai

  • Set up a build in your own CI and choose an origin: Object Storage for static output, compute instances or Kubernetes for server rendering
  • Replace Netlify Forms, split testing and functions with services you run or buy
  • Move redirects and headers from netlify.toml or _redirects to Property Manager rules or the application
  • Replace Deploy Previews with a staging environment, test on Akamai's staging network, then activate and switch DNS

Main effort driver: running the origin and replacing built-in features

Akamai-fronted origin to Netlify

Typical when a team wants managed builds and previews

  • Connect the repository to Netlify and confirm your framework builds there
  • Move redirects and headers from Property Manager rules to netlify.toml
  • Map Akamai security rules to Netlify's firewall features, and rewrite EdgeWorkers as Edge Functions
  • Copy environment variables, validate a Deploy Preview, then point DNS directly at Netlify

Main effort driver: the number of edge rules and EdgeWorkers to replace

Splitting hostnames between them

Typical when Akamai stays for the rest of the estate

  • Keep Akamai properties for legacy apps, APIs and media hostnames
  • Point the front end's hostname directly at Netlify, as Netlify recommends
  • Use Netlify rewrites to proxy specific paths, such as an API, to origins behind Akamai
  • Align security policy across both, and document which edge owns each hostname

Main effort driver: security policy alignment and hostname ownership

Common questions

Is Akamai an alternative to Netlify?

Only partly. Akamai delivers and protects sites at very large scale and sells cloud compute, but it does not offer Git deploys with a preview for every change, forms or split testing. To host a front end on Akamai, you build it in your own pipeline and run the origin yourself, or with a partner.

Can I put Akamai in front of Netlify?

You can, but Netlify advises against it. Its support guidance says a CDN in front adds latency, can serve stale content after a deploy and breaks features such as split testing and accurate analytics. If you must, point the proxy at your .netlify.app hostname and do not cache Netlify-served routes. Netlify supports this setup only for Enterprise customers.

Can Akamai host the same frameworks as Netlify?

Yes, if you operate them. Static output can be served from Akamai Cloud Object Storage behind Akamai's CDN, and server-rendered frameworks run on Akamai Cloud compute instances or Kubernetes. EdgeWorkers is designed for request and response logic at the edge, not for running a full framework server.

Which one is cheaper?

They price different things. Netlify Pro starts at $20 per month with unlimited members and bills usage in credits. Akamai delivery and security are usually quote-based contracts, while Akamai Cloud compute starts at $5 per month for a shared CPU instance. For high-traffic estates, a negotiated Akamai contract can compare well; for a single front end, Netlify is usually simpler to budget.

Which is better for regulated industries?

Both hold SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001 and PCI DSS. Netlify supports HIPAA with a BAA. Akamai adds FedRAMP Moderate and ISO 27017 and 27701, which matters for public sector buyers. Ask each vendor for its current reports through its trust center.

Is Sengo an Akamai partner?

No. Sengo is an official Netlify partner and delivers projects on Akamai without a partnership. See how we work with each platform: Netlify, Akamai, or read our Netlify vs Vercel comparison.
