Vercel vs Akamai:front-end cloud or enterprise edge?

These two are not like-for-like. Vercel is a developer front-end cloud: push to Git, get a preview, ship to its CDN with functions included. Akamai is an enterprise edge platform for delivery and security at very large scale, with its own cloud compute. Many organizations end up using both, so the real question is which job each one should do.

Written by Sengo, which delivers projects on both Vercel and Akamai and has no partnership with either. We are an official Netlify partner, which competes with Vercel. We disclose this; it does not decide the verdict.

Vercel
vsAkamai

TL;DR

The honest short answer

If you need to ship and iterate on a modern front end, especially a Next.js site, Vercel gets you there with far less operational work. Every change gets a preview URL, builds and hosting are managed, and pricing is published and self-serve.

If you need to deliver and protect a large, mixed web estate, with strict security, video and image delivery at scale or government compliance, Akamai is built for that job. You or a partner run the origin, and delivery and security are usually negotiated in an enterprise contract.

Choose Vercel if

Your team ships a modern front end

Git deploys with previews, day-one Next.js support, Fluid compute and built-in analytics, with published pricing.

Choose Akamai if

You deliver and protect a large estate

More than 4,300 edge locations, WAF, bot and DDoS protection in one product, media optimization and FedRAMP Moderate.

When to choose each

Choose Vercel when

You want the shortest path from code to production

  • Your site or product is built on Next.js and you want new features first
  • Reviewers need a preview link for every change before it goes live
  • You do not want to operate servers, build pipelines or CDN rules
  • You want published pricing you can start with this week
  • Your security needs are covered by a managed firewall with custom rules

Choose Akamai when

You need delivery and security at enterprise scale

  • You protect many sites, apps and APIs, not one front end
  • Bot abuse, credential stuffing or large DDoS attacks are a real risk for you
  • You deliver heavy image or video traffic to audiences around the world
  • Procurement requires FedRAMP Moderate or a negotiated enterprise contract
  • Your team, or a partner, already runs origins and infrastructure as code

Using Vercel and Akamai together

Large organizations often keep Akamai for the wider estate and host a new front end on Vercel. That works, but Vercel's own documentation recommends against placing a reverse proxy in front of a Vercel project. Plan the setup with that guidance in mind.

What Vercel says about a proxy in front

Vercel warns that a proxy in front reduces its firewall's visibility into traffic, hides real visitor IP addresses, adds a second network hop and creates a second cache layer. If your organization still requires it, Akamai is one of the providers Vercel supports through Verified Proxy Lite on all plans.
For Akamai, Vercel asks you to enable the True-Client-IP header in Property Manager and to turn on Origin IP ACL, and to work with Akamai to harden the header against spoofing. Never cache /.well-known/vercel/*, send the correct SNI hostname, and purge Akamai's cache after each deploy, since Vercel only purges its own.
A pattern we often recommend: keep Akamai in front of the hostnames it already protects, such as legacy apps and APIs, and point the new front end's hostname directly at Vercel. If the front end must sit behind Akamai, follow Vercel's Verified Proxy setup and test on Akamai's staging network before you activate it in production.

If you need to switch or combine

Moving between these platforms is more than a configuration change, because Akamai does not build or host your front end for you. Adding Akamai in front of Vercel is usually the smaller project.

Vercel to Akamai

Typical when a site must join an estate already on Akamai

  • Set up a build in your own CI and choose an origin: Object Storage for static output, compute instances or Kubernetes for server rendering
  • Run Next.js as a Node.js server you operate, and replace Vercel-specific features such as Fluid compute, analytics and flags
  • Recreate redirects, headers and caching as Property Manager rules or in the application
  • Replace per-change previews with a staging environment, test on Akamai's staging network, then activate and switch DNS

Main effort driver: running the origin and rebuilding the preview workflow

Akamai-fronted origin to Vercel

Typical when a team wants managed builds and previews

  • Connect the repository to Vercel and confirm your framework builds there
  • Move redirects and headers from Property Manager rules to vercel.json or the framework config
  • Map Akamai security rules to Vercel's firewall, or keep Akamai in front using Verified Proxy
  • Copy environment variables, test a preview deployment, then change DNS

Main effort driver: the number of edge rules and EdgeWorkers to replace

Adding Akamai in front of Vercel

Typical when security policy requires one edge for every site

  • Create an Akamai property with your Vercel domain as the origin
  • Enable True-Client-IP and Origin IP ACL, as Vercel's Verified Proxy setup requires
  • Exclude /.well-known/vercel/* from caching and send the correct SNI hostname
  • Automate an Akamai purge after each Vercel deploy, then test on staging and activate

Main effort driver: cache, purge and security rule tuning

Common questions

Is Akamai an alternative to Vercel?

Only partly. Akamai delivers and protects sites at very large scale and sells cloud compute, but it does not offer Git-push deploys with previews for every change. To host a front end on Akamai, you build it in your own pipeline and run the origin yourself, or with a partner. Many teams use Akamai and a front-end cloud together.

Can I put Akamai in front of Vercel?

Yes, but Vercel does not recommend a reverse proxy in front of its projects, because it reduces firewall visibility and adds a second cache. If you need it, Akamai is a supported Verified Proxy Lite provider: enable True-Client-IP and Origin IP ACL, exclude /.well-known/vercel/* from caching and purge Akamai after each deploy.

Can Akamai host a Next.js site?

Yes, if you operate it. A static export can be served from Akamai Cloud Object Storage behind Akamai's CDN. Server rendering needs a Node.js server on Akamai Cloud compute instances or Kubernetes. EdgeWorkers is designed for request and response logic at the edge, not for running a full Next.js server.

Which one is cheaper?

They price different things. Vercel Pro starts at $20 per month with one deploying seat and metered usage beyond $20 of included credit. Akamai delivery and security are usually quote-based contracts, while Akamai Cloud compute starts at $5 per month for a shared CPU instance. For high-traffic estates, a negotiated Akamai contract can compare well; for a single front end, Vercel is usually simpler to budget.

Which is better for regulated industries?

Both hold SOC 2 Type 2, ISO 27001:2022 and PCI DSS. Akamai adds FedRAMP Moderate and ISO 27017, 27018 and 27701, which matters for public sector buyers. Vercel offers a HIPAA BAA as a paid add-on on Pro. Ask each vendor for its current reports through its trust center.

Is Sengo an Akamai partner?

No. Sengo delivers projects on Akamai and on Vercel without a partnership with either. We are an official Netlify partner and Dataweavers partner. See how we work with each platform: Vercel, Akamai, or read our Netlify vs Vercel comparison.
